Parameadows Special School provides educational programs for children with disabilities in the Illawarra, stretching from Helensburgh to Albion Park. The school facilities are also utilised for after school care and vacation play centre school holidays to serve the needs of special children and their families.

Play is an important part of life, and for children with disabilities this is just as true as it is for everyone else. Play is the language that brings children of different abilities together. Through playing with other children, they develop social skills, learn physical skills, and learn about behaviour, communication, acceptance and friendship.

In 2010 The SCF Inc is donating its fundraising to this Special School. In the past 3 years The SCF has raised in excess of $75,000 for Charities and Childrens Hospitals and we hope this year will be the same.

Last year our old forum Pigeontalk.org raised near $600 for the school, a tremendous effort.

This year we are seeking help from our members to once again dig deep so we can sponsor a team or two in the 2010 event which will help out ParaMeadows Special School and their ongoing commitment to our kids with disabilities.

As the main purpose of Pigeons Australia is to help promote the sport of pigeon racing around the country we have come up with some promotional items that can advertise your pigeons, event, loft or service.

So far we have coffee mugs and drink coasters designed for the ‘Hop the water classic’ event with more products for release soon.
We can make mugs to suit your loft and pigeons too.

We have chosen some additional items firstly some quality metal key rings available in rectangular, circle, oval or heart shaped pictures of your logo’s or pigeons or anything you like. Just provide the picture.

While I tend to agree with many aspects of each individuals view, I personally would love to take up the challenge of competing against our regions best in the extreme distance challenges. My argument being those who wish to compete at these races should pay for them. Unfortunately, our system is everyone pays even if they don’t plan on having a go at the race.

What I am against is fanciers who due to their own circumstances cannot be competitive against those who have many hours to spend with their birds. We had a get together on Friday night where a self described full time flyer (retired, and I reiterate self described) fancier said how good it is to win enough prize money to pay for his racing. I questioned the fairness of this system, even though I too won enough prize money to pay for my entire season.

My argument being that why should a ‘part time flyer’ pay for the ‘full time flyer’?

The response from the above mentioned fancier was it should provide motivation, and in fact he had not flown for 15 years due to working and readying himself for retirement.

The question was ‘How can a shift worker with 2 young children in an average loft position be competitive against a full time fancier in a favorable loft position’?

His response; ‘they should wait till they can!’

So what them happens to his precious prize money? If they stragglers drop out, the price goes up and the prize pool drops.

Well what happens then if a competitor is banned rather than sanctioned? The fraternity cries ‘too bad cheater’. But what if it wasn’t for cheating? What if it was for the equivalent of a traffic misdemeanor? Even if the perpetrator made restitution with the individual they inconvenienced before any federation sanction!

Thats ok, lets lose another fancier. We have an abundance of them.

Many have voiced their opinion on the matter of the banned suspect. Some with a qualified and informed view, but the majority from spite due to being flogged by the top fancier or giving an outside view to support a mate and playing a game of Chinese whisper. While I respect a qualified view, I cannot take the jealous opinion of spiteful individuals.

And what of recent posts of pedigree content? From the same source who condones his idol as changing – ‘Has bred 2 birds in fed time every year’ into ‘has bred 2 fed birds in the VHA every year!’. Or the same source who changes the origin of imported birds ancestors to more marketable names! (eg Madam Dalores is Vandeenabeele).

What is the future of our sport?

One loft races? As the demand for duel working families grows, so too does the requirement of a social atmosphere. Nothing cries socail more than a one loft race or a social/fundraiser day such as the Canberra, Kyabram or Warrnambool days.

Pigeon Punt Mr Van Beers by my own admission is a man set in his ways, but he has stuck his own head on the chopping block to provide an event that brings fanciers together from all over the country. While I am critical of some of his practices, I will continue to support the event simply due to the devotion John has applied to promoting our brilliant sport.

Adelaide Pigeon Club supplies a tested event that continues to retain its competitors. If the frat continue to re-enter the loft, you can be assured that they are running an event that meets the critical demands of pigeon fanciers.

Parkes One Loft, Taree 5,000 and QLD 10,000 two further events where the organisors have given their own time and home to promote our sport. I apologise to any other one loft race that I have not mentioned, but I like to give a qualified view and not simply repeat what I have heard ‘on the grapevine’.

The same applies to any committee member who has given their own time to supply an event such as a breeders plate or open event. Having been involved in the evolution of the Hop The Water Classic I have grown an appreciating gratitude to any member of any organisation who has given up their own time (time away from family) to supply an avenue for fanciers to once again meet and engage n the friendly banter we all should be enjoying. The most recent criticism I have received is I failed to post out a basketing list (which was online). While I appreciate any comments and see them as constructive, I fail to understand why it is the biggest mud slingers in our hobby are those who refuse to step up to the plate and do anything to promote the sport of pigeon racing.

So if you have taken to the time to read this post, hopefully you will understand that for our sport to survive we need to take ownership. The growing tendancy is to condemn the individuals who give their own time to organise events or those who succeed by winning. Rather than be so  spiteful, how about we encourage the outcasts to fully participate in the great sport of ‘Pigeon Racing’!
